The Evolution Of The Cell Phone

Cell phones were conceived circa 1983 (although historical records date far back as in 1843 when Michael Faraday conducted his initial experiments to show space conducts electricity) and since then we have come a long long way. What appeared ultra modern hip and cool back then, now seems like junkyard crap no one really wants. From the very first model of 1983, Motorola DynaTAC 8000X to the latest smartphones such the Apples’ iphone running on 3G networks, the cell phone does everything else in addition to making calls: take pictures, watch streaming videos, download applications (“apps”), browse the internet, send and receive text messages, chat on social media programs etc. The cellular phone market is inundated and being continuously bombarded with state-of-the-art models such that choosing a cell phone requires an unprecedented level of expertise and market research savvy. People no longer walk in stores, instead phones are extensively researched online, prices are compared on several websites, features are reviewed on blogs, discussed, dissected—you name it. The cell phone consumer has wizened up and no longer blindly accepts any devices thrown at them from cell phone manufacturers. In this day and age, life without a cell phone seems inconceivable as we have the constant need to be in touch and communication with others. But yes, there was once a simpler time when cell phones did not exist. Let’s take you through the evolution of the cell phone from its most rudimentary state to the high tech model of tomorrow.

The history of mobile phones undoubtedly has it beginnings in radio telephone technology which first started with two-way radios (known as “mobile rigs”). These were found mostly in cars and users could not dial numbers from the vehicles. The first fully automatic mobile phone system was developed by Ericsson in Sweden in 1956. This did not necessitate manual control but was very bulky at a weight of 40kg (90lb)! In 1967, each mobile phone model developed was constrained to the cell area serviced by one base station throughout the phone call. Unfortunately, this did not provide continuity of automatic telephone service to mobile phones displacement through several cell phone areas as they did not permit “mobility”. In 1970, engineers came up with an automatic "call handoff" system. This permitted mobile phones fluidity i.e. users were allowed to move through several cell areas during a single conversation without loss of conversation or particular disruption or disintegration of service.

In the 1990s, 'second generation' (2G) mobile phone systems such as GSM, IS-136 ("TDMA"), iDEN and IS-95 ("CDMA") were introduced. 2G phone systems were characterized by digital circuit switched transmission and the introduction of advanced and fast phone-to-network signaling. The 2G networks introduced a new form on communication called SMS text messaging. This was initially feasible only on GSM networks and but eventually spread and available on all digital networks. The first person-to-person SMS text message was most likely sent in Finland in 1993.
Here are a few visual depictions of models from the earliest cell phone to the latest craze:
