The Impact of cell phones in today’s society

Cell phones are now becoming an integral part of our lives and important for many people in the world today. Some people believe that the mobile phones are a result of evolving technology but the truth is, they have eventually evolved the modern day lifestyle. It has proved to be an essential need for everyone in today’s society. Not only have they reduced the communication barriers but as they say, the world is getting flatter.

In the past few years we find that the use of cellular phones had increased drastically. Traditionally they were just used for the purpose of calling but now the scope has widened. It allows you to send text messages, MMS, play games, watch videos, enjoy your favorite TV shows or join a number of social networking sites just at the press of a button. This states that the todays cellular world is not just a mere communication device/tool but it has a powerful impact on our social lives.

Apart from a number of positive aspects let us now look at its darker side. With the decreasing costs, the market demand is expanding at a higher pace and as a result mobiles can be seen everywhere, every time even when it is not required. One can easily find a person trying to control the steering wheel of a car by one hand and busy operating a cellular phone with the other. Nowadays the excessive use of cell phones is perhaps the main reason for the increase in the number of road accidents. Many countries such as Egypt, Israel, Japan, Portugal and Singapore have banned both hand-held and hands-free use of mobile phones whereas some other countries including the UK, France, and many US stateshave banned hand-held phone use only, allowing hands-free use only.

Few of the potential pitfalls can be observed in schools as well. Use of cell phones during schools hours not only distracts students from studies but it can be used for various malpractices as well such as for cheating in exams, cyber bullying etc and perhaps it is becoming a major threat from security point of view. The easy availability of phone is held responsible for such a security threat. The ill effects is not only limited to schools but its roots are spread all over. Use of cell phones at public places is certainly an invasion of privacy. The built in cameras are a threat to privacy in various public places such as swimming pools, rest rooms etc.

As per a study by Motorola, it was found that one in every ten cell phone subscribers also has a second phone that often is kept secret from other family members. These phones may be used to engage in activities including extramarital affairs or stealthy business dealings.

With the tremendous increase in the use of cell phone in our daily lives one really can’t undermine its ill effects on our health. Many reports showcased that the radiations of the mobile towers have an adverse affect on our health. Report says that the electromagnetic radiations from such devices are harmful to humans and other organisms. Exposure to the harmful radiations for a period of about 2-3 hours has reported to produce cataract in rabbits eye.

Apart from a number of disadvantages one cannot overshadow the comfort provided by this tool /gadget of modern life. It has really made the world look smaller than ever before. One really can’t underestimate its significant aspect as well in our daily lives.
